Migration to EndianOS 6.3

This lesson guides you through the process of upgrading your supported Endian UTM 5 to the 6.3 EndianOS version. For this procedure to be the most successful, you should have physical access to your Endian Appliance and have a bootable USB stick.

Before starting the procedure,
carefully read ALL of this document!

Introduction

We are releasing the EndianOS UTM 6.3 software to selected partners and customers in order for them to evaluate our product in an environment with real users and traffic so that we can collect important feedback.  This feedback will provide a critical pathway for Endian that leads to the general public release of EndianOS 6.3 for all.

  • Only English language is complete (Italian/German will be completed in a future update)
  • Hotspot is not available (will be added in a future release)
  • Network monitoring (NTOP) is missing and (will be replaced in a future release)
  • Live Logs require HTTP Authentication (will be fixed in the future update)
Before You Begin

If you have Hotspot enabled on your current appliance, you must disable this feature prior to starting the migration procedure below.

Hardware Migration Procedure

The procedure is only applicable for upgrading existing Endian hardware appliances.

Prerequisites
  • You must have a supported UTM model (see above) running the most current version of EndianOS which is 5.2.15
  • You must have a 2x 2GB or larger bootable USB stick
  • (Optional) Serial console cable with adapters if required to connect a computer to the Endian appliance

Step 1:  Create a backup of your current Endian 5.x appliance on one of the USB drives using this article.

Step 2:  You should receive a link from an Endian representative for EndianOS 6.3.  Download and write the 6.3 image onto the other (unused) USB drive following these instructions.

Step 3:  Install your 6.3 image onto your appliance by:

  • Plug in the USB stick (from Step 2) into the appliance
  • Start the appliance and install the system. Before the system starts the installation, you will hear 10 quick, short "beeps" followed by a long one: this is the countdown that precedes the installation.
  • Wait for the installation to complete, which is suggested by three quick beeps followed by a longer one.
  • Afterwards the appliance will turn itself off, if it does not, you need to forcefully power it off and remove the USB stick.
  • The final step is to power back on the device.

Step 4: Restore a backup on the Appliance.

  • Plug in the USB stick (from Step 1) with the backup into an available USB port on the Endian appliance.
  • When asked to restore the backup, select Yes from the drop-down menu and follow the instruction.

Step 5:  Open a ticket with Endian Support to update your appliance in Endian Network.

DO NOT UPDATE (System > Updates) your appliance until your ticket with support is resolved!
