Europe's path to digital sovereignty

In an increasingly connected world, digital sovereignty is becoming one of the key factors for success. While it has always been important to retain control over one's own data and remain independent of external providers, the issue has now taken on greater significance in light of increasing geopolitical tensions.

The European Union has also recognized the strategic importance of digital sovereignty and set itself ambitious goals. With its European Digital Decade program, the EU aims to drive forward the digital transformation in Europe. The goal is to create a digital society based on European values that empowers citizens and businesses.

To achieve this goal, significantly more organizations would need to use European technology solutions. The European DIGITAL SME Alliance has therefore announced the publication of a “Tech Sovereignty Catalog” that will list and evaluate the available European solutions, from connectivity to cloud, cybersecurity, data infrastructure, and artificial intelligence (AI).

This catalog is based on the EuroStack concept from September 2024. This is a conceptual framework designed to help Europe build an interoperable and sovereign digital infrastructure.

Another important milestone is the EU Data Act, which was passed on January 11, 2024. The aim is to optimize Europe-wide access to data and data exchange, while complying with EU data protection regulations. The law came into force in September last year.

With the European Chips Act, Europe aims to meet its demand for semiconductors, which are a prerequisite for digitalization.

The Gaia-X project laid the foundation for each of these initiatives. The Franco-German initiative from 2020 set itself the goal of promoting secure and interoperable cloud and data services that give users improved control over their own data.

Endian Secure Digital Platform

Secure and sovereign today

The Endian Secure Digital Platform supports companies on their path to digital sovereignty. As an open-source-based platform, it enables the networking and securing of both IT and OT systems. From the very beginning, it was developed with the goal of offering its users maximum control and flexibility.

Today, the Endian Secure Digital Platform combines the components for digital sovereignty:

IT & OT cybersecurity

The open-source operating system EndianOS forms the basis of the Endian Secure Digital Platform. It was developed according to the principle of security by design and contains several coordinated security tools to protect all networked systems.

Access and data protection according to zero trust

Every single access is checked. The micro-segmentation of the network allows individual protection levels to be set up.

Flexibility thanks to open source

Users can choose between different hosting options because the Endian Secure Digital Platform is also available as an on-premises solution. Migration is easy. All security gateways are available as software variants and can convert existing hardware (x86_64) into a powerful UTM.

Docker enables third-party integration

Additional software solutions can be run directly on edge devices via Docker containers.

Achieve compliance

Some of the technical requirements from GDPR, IEC 62443, ISO 27001, and NIS2 are already integrated into the platform. The Endian Secure Digital Platform thus helps companies achieve compliance.

Secure remote access

Granular role and rights management makes it easy to set up finely granular access rights. All connections are encrypted and can be monitored if necessary.
