Endian - Endian Case Study

Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. is one of the largest and most traditional sports clubs in Germany. HSV started life on 29 September 1887 when SC Germania was founded. It finally merged with Hamburg-based FC 1988 on 2 June 1919 and FC Falke 1906 to form "Hamburg 88-Germania-Falke" with club colours of blue and black. The Hamburg club now has 58,660 members, of which 53,923 are Supporting Members (as of 01/02/2009).

The club's flagship is the Bundesliga football team, which is the only club to have belonged to the elite German league every year since its foundation in 1963. Hamburger SV soon established itself as one of the top clubs in Germany. Since 1923, it has won the German championship six times, the German Cup three times, the European Cup in 1977 and the European Champions Cup in 1983. Football legends the likes of Uwe Seeler and record-breaking player Manfred Kaltz started life at the club, as did legendary manager Ernst Happel.

The challenge

The challenge for Steffen Becker, IT Manager at HSV, was to provide a fast, secure IT infrastructure for the journalists for the UEFA Cup Finals 2010 to be held at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg. At the same time, the HSV offices were to be kitted out with a more modern, standardised Open Source UTM appliance to back up the existing network.

The solution

An Endian Software Appliance Version 2.3 was used on a DELL Power Edge Server and successfully accommodated the needs of the UEFA Cup Final and 600 reporting journalists while at the same time meeting the strict security requirements set out by UEFA. HSV then obtained an Endian UTM Macro X2 for use in the office. An existing ageing firewall solution and other Open Source tools in place were replaced by the Endian Open Source solution as part of a consolidation process.

The outcome

The Endian Appliance is currently used to secure around 150 users in the administrative office. In addition, individual users are given employee access to a secure remote workspace via SSL and Open VPN. With only rough journalist numbers known in advance, future events at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg can also be handled flexibly and securely using the existing network infrastructure in the office and the Endian UTM Macro X2.

Statement

For us, Open Source Tools were and continue to be established, good, mature and standardised. In opting for Endian from South Tyrol, we were consciously deciding to use an Open Source UTM manufacturer. We were given top-notch advice and support throughout by moveTECH, a certified Endian Partner.
